Want the best turkey burger you’ve ever had? You can whip it up in just 20 minutes! The trick is to put flavor into the burger, along with very tasty sauce to give it both balance and punch.
Ingredients (makes 2 burgers, will double easily):
2/3 lb ground turkey thigh meat
2 Tbsp ketchup
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp salt
fresh ground black pepper to taste
thinly sliced yellow or red onion
2 slices of aged white cheddar cheese
2 burger buns (I prefer potato buns, but any will do)
Toppings:
lettuce leaves (romaine, butter or iceberg)
sliced tomato
sliced dill pickles
Whit’s special sauce (below)
Whit’s Special Sauce:
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 Tbsp ketchup
1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
2 Tbsp liquid from a jar of pickled jalapeño peppers
1 tsp cayenne pepper (or to taste)
Make the sauce first by mixing all ingredients in a small bowl, then set aside. Prepare the toppings, so they are ready to go when the burgers are done. Toast the buns if you plan to do that. Mix the turkey thigh, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper in a bowl until thoroughly blended (best done with your hands). Form into 2 equal sized patties, about 3/4″ thick. Heat a skillet over medium high heat, then add a bit of vegetable or canola oil. When the oil is hot, carefully lay the patties in the pan, cook for 2 minutes, then reduce the heat to medium. Cook an additional 2 minutes, then flip the burgers, and cook 2 minutes. Top the patties with the sliced onions, then the cheese and cook 2 minutes longer until the cheese is melted.
On the bottom half of the bun, spread a bit of the sauce, then top with lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes, and pickles. Place the burger on top. Spread more sauce on the top half of the bun, and place on top of the burger. Now prepare to get messy and enjoy the best turkey burger you’ve ever had!
Bon appétit!
