A Tasting Menu to Die For at Citronelle in DC

Aug 20, 2010 | 0 comments

My husband, Eric, and I headed back to Washington DC last weekend for a great occasion — to celebrate the 70th birthdays of his parents (my in-laws). My brother-in-law also joined us from Europe, where he’s been living the past many years. We decided it was definitely an occasion worth celebrating with a special night out, and we opted to reserve a table for 5 at Michel Richard’s amazing Citronelle restaurant. It’s a place my hubby and I have been wanting to go for a while — he being as much a foodophile as I am.

Thank goodness we all were up for doing the chef’s tasting menu – with wine parings of course! The menu was incredibly impressive and food gorgeously presented on every plate. Here’s a look at the delights we had throughout the evening:

We were especially blown away by the eggplant gazpacho – with chile pepper, radish, micro-greens, and served in a beautiful oval bowl resting on a bed of formed ice. You can imagine the lobster burger was unearthly in its deliciousness, and practically made me swoon when paired with the fabulous Puligny-Montrachet that it was paired with. The Gevrey-Chambertin was my favorite wine of the evening…sultry, earthy and complex, but absolutely smooth and great fruit. What a treat!

We were in luck that Chef Michel was in the restaurant while we were there, and we had the pleasure of meeting him. He even gave my mother-in-law a birthday peck on the cheek! Monsieur Richard is jolly in every way, truly magnetic in personality, and a wonder in the kitchen. I was so thrilled to have met him in person!

I have to say that the restaurant itself is gorgeous, the staff is skilled and attentive, and the ambiance is warm and welcoming. I’d recommend Citronelle to anyone in the DC area (or anywhere else for that matter), and can hardly wait until the next worthy celebration comes our way…we’ll go back for more!

Share one of your favorite “tasting menu” experiences here…I’d love to find more wonderful places to celebrate great eating.

Bon appetit!
